About

Associate Professor Hugh McGregor is a specialist General Surgeon with a subspecialist focus on hernia and abdominal wall surgery, chronic abdominal wall and groin pain, and minimally invasive surgical techniques, including laparoscopic and robotic surgery.

He is the current President of the Australia & New Zealand Hernia Society (ANZHernia) and is nationally recognised for his expertise in the assessment and management of complex hernias, recurrent hernias, and chronic groin and abdominal wall pain syndromes.

His clinical practice includes the management of inguinal, femoral, umbilical, ventral, and incisional hernias, using contemporary open, laparoscopic, and robotic approaches where appropriate. He has a particular interest in postoperative and chronic groin pain and nerve-related abdominal wall pain.

In addition to abdominal wall surgery, A/Prof McGregor maintains expertise in proctology, including the assessment and surgical management of haemorrhoids, anal fissure, fistulae, and other anorectal conditions. He also undertakes a wide range of general surgical procedures consistent with a specialist general surgery practice as well as endscopy and colonoscopy.

A/Prof McGregor holds a PhD and an academic appointment as an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Queensland. He is actively involved in clinical research, surgical education, and professional leadership, regularly contributing to national and international hernia meetings and guideline development.

He is known for being down to earth. He has a plain talking, interested and thoughtful, patient-centred approach. He takes time to clearly explain diagnoses and treatment options, with an emphasis on evidence-based care and long-term outcomes.
